Maternal–foetal medicine (MFM focuses on diagnosis and therapy of health issues of the mother and foetus during pregnancy. Foetal medicine is a branch of Obstetrics, taking care of high-risk pregnancies having complications.
A mother is supposed to see a maternal-foetal medicine specialist if she develops a medical condition during pregnancy or has problems during delivery or else if your baby has a birth defect, the mother must see a Foetal medicine specialist during her pregnancy.
Common Reasons to consult Foetal Medicine Specialist:
1. Better and advanced testing and monitoring relative to a gynaecologist or obstetrician.
2. They provide reliable and detailed information about pregnancy and the conditions that may affect your motherhood.
Generally, you should visit your gynaecologist as soon as you suspect you are pregnant. After your first visit, your gynecologist will schedule your anc check up weeks every month up to 28 weeks. Post 28 weeks you might have to visit your doctor every 2 weeks till your 36th month of pregnancy followed by weekly visits till your delivery. However, the frequency of your pregnancy checkups depends on several factors like your health condition and risk factors.
