IVF

IVF

IVF is a process to make a baby in the lab. It uses the same genetic material as the parents and then puts the baby embryo back inside the mother’s womb to deliver the baby naturally. Sometimes, IVF may involve known or anonymous donor eggs or donor sperm to make the baby embryo in the lab.

How is it done?

A couple trying to be parents can go for an IVF when their chances of conception are naturally less.

Steps involved in IVF are as follows –

  • Collecting eggs from the ovaries of mother during ovulation and storing them.
  • Collecting sperm from the father and storing them.
  • Bringing the eggs and sperms together to fertilise them in the lab.
  • After fertilisation, the embryo is formed.
  • Transferring embryo in the mother’s womb (uterus)

An IVF process cycle takes three weeks usually or longer if the process is split up. With high rates of success, IVF is the most effective type of assisted reproductive technology.

IVF can be done using a couple’s own eggs and sperm. Or IVF may involve eggs, sperm or embryos from a known or anonymous donor.

Who can choose IVF?

For the women of 40 or more years, IVF is a primary treatment for infertility. IVF is also done if you have health conditions.

IVF is your option when you or your partner has:

  • Blockage or damaged fallopian tube
  • Problems with ovulation

  • Less sperm production or function than normal
  • Unknown cause of infertility
